Types of insulation membranes: A smart solution for optimal insulation

Insulation membrane is an effective material used to improve the energy performance of buildings and protect the structure. Also known as technical construction membranes, these foils only work when the right type is applied in the correct place and installed properly. In this article, we’ll explain the different types of insulation foils you can use when insulating your home or building.

Breathable membranes

A breathable membrane, also known as a vapour-permeable membrane, allows moisture in the form of vapour to pass through while blocking water. This is particularly useful when the insulation on the interior side isn’t sufficiently vapour-retardant or wasn’t adequately protected during the construction phase. The breathable membrane acts as a moisture regulator, effectively allowing excess moisture to escape without letting the structure become damp. This extends the life of cladding and roofing, preventing damage to the structure. Breathable membranes are always applied on the cold side (exterior) of the wall and roof, where they can optimally regulate moisture.

Vapour control membranes

A vapour control membrane, also known as a vapour barrier, is an essential component for ensuring optimal insulation. Applied to the warm side (interior) of an insulated structure, it acts as an airtight barrier, preventing warm air from escaping and reducing energy loss. In addition to improving energy efficiency, the vapour control membrane regulates vapour pressure, preventing moist air from penetrating the structure, which could lead to damage and condensation problems. In short, vapour control membranes are indispensable for creating efficient and durable insulation in modern construction.

Vapour barrier membranes

A vapour barrier membrane is an essential part of a well-insulated building. It provides an extremely high level of airtightness, preventing moisture-laden air from escaping from the warm side to the outside. This is particularly important in situations with significant temperature differences between the inside and outside of the building, or in extra humid areas like bathrooms or swimming pools. Using a membrane with a high vapour barrier (Sd value) protects the insulation and maintains optimal humidity levels inside the building, resulting in more efficient and sustainable insulation.

Reflective membrane

Reflective membrane is an innovative solution featuring a reflective surface with low emissivity. This means it not only absorbs radiant heat but also reflects it effectively, leading to better heat control and retention. When used with an air gap, reflective foil significantly boosts the insulation value of a structure. By incorporating reflective foil, buildings can be better insulated, improving energy efficiency and overall comfort.

UV-resistant membranes

One of the key factors that can affect the effectiveness of roofing and facade membranes is exposure to harmful UV rays. This can happen during the construction phase when membranes are exposed to the elements, or when they’re used in semi-open facades or roof tiles that aren’t fully sealed. To prevent this, it’s advisable to use a UV-resistant membrane. These membranes are not only breathable and waterproof, but they also provide optimal protection against harmful UV radiation, ensuring your roof and facade membranes function effectively for a longer period.

Radiator film

Radiator film is a thin, reflective foil that can be easily placed between a radiator and an exterior wall. This simple solution optimizes heat transfer and minimizes heat loss through the wall, helping to lower your energy bills. By using radiator foil, you actively reduce energy loss while creating a more efficient and comfortable living environment.
